Covered Portage Cove to Killarney

Leg 17 of our 2022 cruise up north

Last night and this morning we actually got a little rain. It’s the first rain we’ve had on this trip since staying at Harbor Island nearly two weeks ago! My new hatch shade got some testing, and needed some adjusting. The aft end of the shade needs to be aft of the upper (aft) end of the hatch, otherwise water leaks in. It works well after the adjustment, though.

The hatch shade needs some adjustment in this photo… the aft end needs to move a few more inches aft or rain sneaks in the corner of the hatch.

After the rain in the morning, we did our usual hike up the cliffs over Covered Portage.

View from atop some of the cliffs. Hiking farther along the top (east, or the left cliff in this photo)…
…and we could see Priorities just behind the treeline (on the right). And we could see the seaplane taking off.
The “outer” cove by Covered Portage is still pretty!

For this trip, Kristin has been cooking almost every dinner. She’s awesome at it (and I’m super thankful for it), but she needed a break. Killarney, Ontario is a mere 3 miles from Covered Portage, and Herbert Fisheries has really good fish and chips. We could take the dinghy there, but our flat bottom inflatable only does 3 or 4 knots… so it’s an hour dinghy ride each way into town.

To reduce travel time, we moved Priorities and anchored in Killarney Bay, just west of town. It’s not known as being a “desirable” place to anchor, though it is protected from the weather. Boat wakes are a little annoying here, and I worry a little about blocking the view from cottages ashore, but the sunsets are amazing!

Tomorrow we’ll get a pumpout at one of the marinas in Killarney. It looks like it might be a good day to head east for another goal of the trip: the Bustard Islands.

Nice sunset viewed from Killarney Bay near the Killarney Channel.
