During our 2022 cruise up north
(to read about our previous leg, Little Current to Maryanne Cove, click here)
We woke up this morning to hear one of the boats near us in the anchorage start their generator. I’m not that opposed to having a generator… Priorities has one that I recently installed, after all… but this was a cheap portable gas generator that sounded like a lawn mower! Maryanne Cove is surrounded by cliffs, so it reverberated around the whole anchorage. It ran for two hours, then they left right after. I like to think I run our generator a little more considerately, and the sound is nicer, anyway.
But, whatever, the weather was great again today!
This morning we also noticed Zodiacs shuttling people to and from the trailhead up the hill just outside Maryanne Cove. I went for a paddle, and talked to one of the guides. They were from the Viking Octontis, one of the cruise ships that stop in Milwaukee several times this summer. They were anchored just outside Baie Fine, and were going to head up to Lake Superior later in the week. Passengers pay thousands for their cruise (which is probably super nice) and they come HERE for one of their excursions! And we got to spend two nights here!
I also noticed a helicopter flying along Baie Fine multiple times during the day, presumably departing from the Okeechobee Lodge at Baie Fine’s entrance. I assume it was another Viking excursion, too.
When it seemed the cruise ship passengers had left, we dinghied to the east side of the cove (by a nice cottage) and found the trailhead for Casson Peak. It’s a fairly strenuous climb since the hills are so rocky and steep. The view is pretty cool, though.
