Boat Work: Hog to Rous Island

Leg 12 of our 2022 cruise up north

After two great nights at Hog Island, we were ready for a change. We were getting close to needing another pump out, some diesel, water, laundry, and groceries.

We did want to get just one more paddle in on our stand up paddle boards, but this morning I discovered one has a pretty big leak along a seam. It may take some patience to fix, as they need to inflate to a pretty high 15 psi. Hopefully it has some life left after repairs.

Our next planned provisioning stop is Little Current, Ontario. I prefer to get there pretty early in the day so we can get more done in town. We also needed to take care of a few boat maintenance chores, too, some of which didn’t require a marina.

Since we got a late start this morning, and since today is still a busy weekend day, we moved over to the southeast corner of Rous Island, informally called “Rous Harbor.” By North Channel standards, it’s not very pretty. However, It’s a mere 4 miles to Little Current, where we plan to go tomorrow.

Light wind again

The winds were light yet again, so we motored the 8 miles from Hog to Rous. Once there I checked the engine, the generator, cleaned both heads, and also tried out my new Hatch shade.

Our foredeck hatch now has a shade we can use to scoop more wind in light air and keep light rain out. If we’re worried about rain overnight or when leaving the boat at anchor, we can still leave this hatch open for ventilation now and the berth below will stay mostly dry (hopefully). I made it from a Sailrite kit this past winter as practice for more ambitious sewing projects.

Tomorrow should be a busy day getting stuff done in town.

We were alone until about 7pm, when this boat anchored nearby.
